Woodthorpe in charge of massive Stormers game

EPCR has confirmed the Match Officials for the pivotal Round 4 weekend of the Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup, appointed by a committee chaired by EPCR’s Head of Match Officials, Tony Spreadbury. Spanning 21 matches and featuring referees from eight unions, it will be the final chance for clubs to qualify for the Round of 16 in both competitions and to try and secure the all-important home advantage when the action kicks off on Friday.


Highlights include:

  • Scotland’s Hollie Davidson will take charge of her second ever Investec Champions Cup match as Ulster Rugby host Exeter Chiefs in this weekend’s opening game with qualification still possible for both Pool 1 clubs.

  • Investec Champions Cup make-or-break matches in Pool 3, as Georgia’s Nika Amashukeli takes control for Munster Rugby who will be seeking a win against already-qualified Northampton Saints, looking to qualify top of their Pool; Italy’s Andrea Piardi oversees the Saracens v Castres Olympique decisive match; and England’s Adam Leal takes the middle as Stade Français Paris need a win against Vodacom Bulls to break the top four.

  • Pivotal all-or-nothing Pool 4 matches for Harlequins, DHL Stormers, Sale Sharks and Racing 92 with the men-in-the-middle France’s Pierre Brousset (Harlequins v Glasgow Rugby), England’s Anthony Woodthorpe (Racing 92 v DHL Stormers) and Italy’s Gianluca Gnecchi (Sale Sharks v RC Toulon).

  • Wales’ Ben Whitehouse to referee the Pool 1 battle between Stade Toulousain and Leicester Tigers as both clubs look to finish the pool stage top of the table to secure home advantage in the Round of 16.

  • Morné Ferreira (South Africa) in the middle of the opening game of EPCR Challenge Cup as Cardiff Rugby seek a home win against Connacht Rugby in Pool 1 to secure their qualification. Kicking off at the same time on Friday night, Filippo Russo will make his EPCR Challenge Cup debut in the middle of the Pool 2 match between Newcastle Falcons and Montpellier Hérault Rugby, already qualified, who will be looking for as many points as possible to finish top of the Pool.

  • Evan Urruzmendi (France) to make EPCR Challenge Cup debut in charge of decisive Emirates Lions v Dragons RFC clash, with the final Pool 2 qualification spot up for the taking.
