There was a busy day for Team SA at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Wednesday, one of the busiest of the Games.
Seven sporting codes represented Team SA at the Olympics on Wednesday, although none of them are involved in determining any medals. However, in the first round of the women’s golf, Ashleigh Buhai got herself right up there on the leaderboard after a round of 68 at Le National Golf.
The standout performance of Wednesday morning was at the Stade de France where Jo-Ane van Dyk threw a personal best 64.22m to qualify for the final of the women’s javelin, winning Group A. It was also a good morning for Edmund du Plessis who finished second in his 800m heat in 1:45.73 to comfortably qualify for the semi-finals. Brian Raats also had success, his 2.24m leap securing him a spot in the final of the men’s high jump.
In canoeing, Hamish Lovemore was the only Team SA member to reach the semi-finals when he won through in the men’s kayak single 1 000m.
Team SA started the day with four medals with Tatjana Smith (gold and silver) and the men’s sevens rugby and Alan Hatherly (bronze) putting them at 24th place on the overall table.
For now, the United States (24 golds) lead China (22 golds), Australia (14) and France (13) in the standings.
