How Team SA fared on Tuesday

Team SA sprinter Benjamin Richardson has been withdrawn from Paris 2024 and will take no further part in these Olympics. In confirming the news, the Team SA chief medical officer Dr Jean de Wilde said: “Benjamin sustained a hamstring injury in the men’s 200m heats on Monday and has been withdrawn from all further competition.”

Three sporting codes represent Team SA at the Olympics on Tuesday, although none of them are involved in determining any medals.

Team SA started the day with four medals with Tatjana Smith (gold and silver) and the men’s sevens rugby and Alan Hatherly (bronze) putting them at 24th place on the overall table.

For now, the United States (21 golds) lead China (also 21 golds), France (13) and Australia (12) in the standings.


ATHLETICS

Women’s 400m heats, repechage: Miranda Coetzee ran a PB (personal best) 50.66 to finish second in her heat and qualify for the semi-final

Men’s 200m heats, repechage: Benjamin Richardson withdrawn

Men’s 400m semi-finals: Lythe Pillay finished seventh in his semi-final in 45.24 and didn’t progress to the final

Men’s 400m semi-finals: Zakhiti Nene finished sixth in his semi-final in 45.06 and didn’t progress to the final

Women’s 400m hurdles, semi-finals: Zeney Geldenhuys ran a PB (personal best) 53.90 in her semi-final in finishing third which placed her 10th overall and just out the final

Women’s 400m hurdles, semi-finals: Rogail Joseph ran a PB (personal best) 54.12 in her semi-final in finishing third but out of the final


CANOEING

Men’s kayak, double 500m heats: Hamish Lovemore and Andrew Birkett finished fourth behind Australians Jean van der Westhuyzen and Tom Green and progressed to the quarter-finals

Men’s kayak, double 500m quarter-finals: Hamish Lovemore and Andrew Birkett finished second behind the Spaniards Adrian Del Rio and Marcus Cooper and progressed to the semi-finals

Women’s kayak, double 500m heats: Tiffany Koch and Esti Olivier finished fifth in their heat in 1:52.14 and progressed to the quarter-finals

Women’s kayak, double 500m quarter-finals: Tiffany Koch and Esti Olivier finished sixth in their heat in 1:46.40 and were eliminated


SPORT CLIMBING

Women’s boulder & Lead, semi-final boulder: Lauren Mukheibir placed 20th

Men’s speed, qualification: Joshua Bruyns finished 13th in the seeding qualification and went on to meet Amir Maimuratov of Kazakhstan in the heats. He was eliminated with a time of 5.84, with his opponent scoring 4.94
