Safe Hub Jabulani in Soweto was a hive of activity on Thursday with members of the media, dignitaries, former football legends and other stakeholders and role players ahead of the launch of the 2024 ET Radebe Schools Tournament. The 2024 launch is the foundation’s seventh edition of the tournament.
The annual school’s tournament, which sees a total of eight schools competing in both netball and football is set to take place at the Diepkloof Sports Grounds on Saturday from 8am to 5pm.
The official launch and draw of the tournament became somewhat of a congregation of some of South Africa’s most prominent football legends such as Teboho Moloi, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Edward “Magents” Motale who were all impressed by the growth of the tournament thus far.
Speaking on the sidelines of the launch, foundation founder Lucas Radebe highlighted that the success of this tournament over the past six years has been as a consequence of giving back and most importantly being committed to the development of sports in schools and communities at large.
“The support of the media, community and family has really made this worthwhile, looking at where we come from and to be here seven years later isn’t a small thing. I believe that my success should be measured by how much I have been able to give back to my community.
"Considering how well we have grown, I am expecting this year’s tournament to be a great special one - this is a step closer to us growing from being a Soweto tournament to now being about inclusive of five regions in the province, our goal is to be a national tournament. My message for the participating is that come and have fun, let football be the ultimate winner on the day," he said.
The 2024 edition of the ET Radebe Netball and Football Tournament will be played under the theme “Legends versus Legends” and the legends who have been paired with the competing schools are Benedict Tso Vilakazi, Tshabalala, Moloi, Gloria Hlalele, Willard Katsande, Motale and Reneilwe Letsholonyane just to name a few.
The launch concluded with the official draw for both the football and netball divisions of the tournament.
Individual accolades at the end of the day will be sponsored by some of Foundations partners.
