Busy Saturday for Team SA

It was a busy day for Team SA at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Men’s golfers Christiaan Bezuidenhut and Erik van Rooyen are on eight-under-par heading into Sunday’s final round and are not out of medal contention

Rower Paige Badenhorst was the first Team SA representative in action on Saturday. She finished second in the women’s C final of the single sculls, which gave her 14th place overall. All three Team SA men’s 100m sprinters reached the semi-finals.

Women’s hockey suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to the USA, while Ryan Gibbons, the sole Team SA cycling representative, finished 69th, some 19min 53sec off the winner Remco Evenepoel of Belgium.

Team SA started the day with four medals with Tatjana Smith (gold and silver) and the men’s sevens rugby and Alan Hatherly (bronze) putting them at 24th place on the overall table. For now, China (16 golds) lead France (12), Australia (12) and the United States (11) in the standings.


ATHLETICS

Men’s 100m, first round, heats: Shaun Maswangani (10.06) finished third behind Louie Hinchliffe (9.98) and Noah Lyles (10.04) to qualify for the semi-finals.

Men’s 100m, first round, heats: Benjamin Richardson (10.06) finished fourth in his heat, won by Kayinsola Ajayi of Nigeria in 10.02. Richardson progressed to the semi-finals as one of the fastest from outside the top three.

Men’s 100m, first round, heats: Akani Simbine (10.03) won his heat and moved through to the semi-finals.

Men’s 1 500m repechage: Tshepo Tshite finished fourth in his race in 3:35.45 and Ryan Mphahlele finished 11th in his heat in 3:36.64.

Neither went through to the semi-finals


CYCLING

Men’s road race: Gibbons finished 69th, nearly 20 minutes behind gold medallist Remco Eveneoel of Belgium. Evenepoel came home over a minute clear of the French duo of Valentin Madouas and Christophe Laporte.

Women’s single scull, C final: Paige Badenhorst finished second to Serbia’s Jovana Arsic in 7:27.76 to claim 14th spot overall.
