Even Thor, the god of thunder, could not stop the Lions from taking down the Sharks on Saturday as Sanele Nohamba led his team to victory.

While all eyes were on the North/South Derby at Loftus Versfeld (won by the Bulls, 40-22), Nohambe dominated South Africa's rugby colosseum, Emirates Airline Park, from the first whistle.

He embodied Maximus Decimus Meridius in every way as the smallest man on the field became the perfect on field general.

His passes were swift and precise, his kicks accurate, his decision making perfect and his annoyance factor turned up to 11.

He stood tallest in a game won by the brute force of his Lions forwards and exceptional backs as 40-10 was not a fair reflection of the home sides' dominance over the Springboks-laden Sharks.

While the big fellas did the hard graft up front the No 9 let his backs runs free with Edwill van der Merwe, Marius Louw, Henco van Wyk and Richard Kriel reveling in the space afforded them by the little scrumhalf and flyhalf Jordan Hendrikse.

A massive storm filled with thunderbolts and lightning (very, very frightening), didn't halt the home side's momentum as they used their pace and power to dominate a Sharks team that doesn't seem to understand how to be a team at the moment, no matter their individual talent.

They are the best side in the United Rugby Championship on paper but, as has been said many times - games aren't won on paper but on grass.

With the 'fatties' in total command thanks to the power of JP Smith and Asenathi Ntlabakayne the only disappointment for the Lions would be that they didn't win by more than 30 points, especially when the Sharks were down to 14 men after Bongi Mbonambi had to sit on the naughty chair for 10 minutes in the second half.

This didn't stop the party atmosphere as the Lions fans, literally, danced in the rain as their side put together an exceptional performance, hopefully the guy in the squirrel outfit is okay ...

They were a little grumpy that the Klipdrift and Cola special sold out due to the elongated half-time break ... but even that didn't stop them from singing and screaming for their boys in red.

JC Pretorius showed that he can handle 15s as well as he can play Sevens and that's saying something, while Louw was exception on defense and No 8 Francke Horn proved, once again, that he's a Springbok in waiting.

And, in a time when referees are being bashed from pillar to post, a special mention need to be made of Aimee Barrett-Theron, who handled the game with the kind of calm accuracy that is missing in a lot of game.

She was in control from the start and there were no boos when she ruled against the home side because she was always right.

She was the calmest person in the angriest stadium and never wanted to be the centre of attention.

This win moves the Lions up to 11th on the URC log with 29 points while the Sharks remain rooted to the foot of the table with 10.

First game I've watched in months... Father in law made me do it... But it was indeed very entertaining.
